“….the Spirit of Truth will guide you to all truth”. And the truth is that God is present. We are not alone! Happy feast of the Most Holy Trinity!
Our first reading from Proverbs reminds us that from the beginning the Trinity was present. God created the wondrous universe for us to prove that He is here for us, loves us and desires a relationship with us that will bless us beyond our imagination. All creation proclaims Him. The reason He wants to lead us to the truth (interestingly, the origin of the word truth is faith or covenant) is because we are dumb! What – dumb??? That sound condescending – but no! The origin of the word dumb is vapor, mist, dust. Remember man that you are dust…in other words, worldly. God wants us to fix our eyes on Him, not worldly stuff.
So the first dumb (worldly) mistake man makes is to fall away from this incredible God Who loves him. The author of today’s Psalm response gets that, “What is man that you should be mindful of him..?” And our awesome God says – okay you missed My love when you looked at the majesty of the universe, so I’ll send my Son in human form to let you know I still love you.
How much more in your face can God be? Jesus as fully human says “I Am”. If you believe in Me, I will raise you up. But again man is too dumb (too worldly) to experience the love of God through Jesus. He was here in human form – how much easier could it be to recognize Him?
God doesn’t give up on us. He is Truth, faithful to His covenant. So He sends the Holy Spirit to lead us to faith, lead us to believe that He is here. He is present and He won’t quit pursuing us. Our every breath is leading us to His love. We don’t want to miss out! Through the power of the Spirit of Truth, Jesus left not just a memory of His love. He left His body, His blood so we could be filled with the love of the Trinity everyday.
Why does God continue to be present to us? Because we need Him. Because He wants us to know we’re not alone. Because being alone is hell. Separation from God is hell – the total absence of love. God is lover, Jesus the beloved and the Holy Spirit is the fruit of their love. The Trinity calls us to a love relationship. Out of love, God will do anything to save His family, even an insane act of love like dying on the cross. And we still seem to miss that truth at times. So He sends the Spirit of Truth (remember the word truth means faith) to call us to have faith in Him.
Proverbs reminds us that God delights in the human race. Paul’s letter to the Romans today speaks the truth, “hope (In the Trinity) does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”
